On Rocket League

So over the last couple of weeks I’ve intermittently been playing a game I picked up on PSN since it was one of the free games for July. If the title didn’t give it away it is called Rocket League. Think soccer (or football depending on where you live) with rocket powered cars. I honestly didn’t give it much thought initially until I watched on of my favorite streamers (Day9) playing it.

The game is pretty simple. You drive a car and you try to score goals. That’s it. The thing that I enjoy is that every match only lasts 5 minutes, unless you go in to overtime. There is no voice chat so if you’re just playing to have fun you don’t have to listen to people being jerks if you are not doing very well. Another nice thing is that if you’re like me and don’t feel like playing with other people all the time you can play a single player season, or exhibition games against bots.

Now playing against bots is only fun when you have 3vs3 matches, because the AI does get pretty stupid. If you play 1vs1 they’re just as likely to just hover around their goal defending instead of trying to score. It is also incredibly easy to score lots of goals early in the match if you can get used to doing angled shots. Since there is only one other car in the match it can’t try to get the ball AND defend.

Like I said, the matches go pretty quick and at the end of them you usually (if not always) unlock something new to customize your car. There is a surprising amount of customization in this game as it allows you to pick different vehicles, color schemes and accessories to make you different from the other people playing.

There really isn’t much to talk about other than that. It certainly is a fun game if you just want to play something quick. The problem is with such short matches I often found myself saying “Well, just one more game”….And then it was 2am.

Right now it is available on PC and PS4.
