Mixtape Mondays: Te Amo Amor

Good Morning, Folks! Happy First of June. This is a big month for me because it contains both my birthday and the birthday of my mom. We were a family of Geminis. This morning, I have another mixtape ready to go, and for those who are not already engaged in this practice… I love making mixtapes. They were a big part of my childhood since I had a dual tape deck stereo and made them for my friends, and occasionally for those I was attempting to flirt with. There is a science to the placement of songs, and my goal is to make it so that the entre composure flows from one song to another without having any abrupt shifts. Most of the time, I accomplish this and then post the result for my readers to listen to. At this point, I have thirty-one mixes, and my extra challenge is that I cannot use the exact same version of a song on more than one mixtape.

31 – Te Amo Amor

My girlfriend loves to sing Karaoke, and low-key specializes in singing love songs. I’ve got a few videos of her singing various things, and I think she is pretty damned good at it. So the other day, she was asking me what some of my favorite love songs were. Being the wannabe edgelord that I am, I cannot, of course, choose the standard fare. So this morning, you have a mix of the songs that mean the most to me that exist within the love song category. I am cheating by throwing in the Nada Surf cover of If You Leave, because I have already used that song in my love letter to 80s soundtracks called Tape Deck Held Aloft. The only truly standard love song is Brian Adams banger from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and it was included because it represents the song that I had my first slow dance to. I think the entire thing listens extremely well for being crafted out of such contorted objectives. The two most important for me are Lovesong by The Cure and Because the Night covered by 10,000 Maniacs.

I have various beta testers who give things a listen through to let me know if I am crazy or not. I think this one is pretty good, but I am not one to really dwell upon the love song as a genre. Mixtape Mondays: Spectacle Politique

Good Morning, Folks! Also, Happy Memorial Day to those who celebrate both the meaning behind it… and just the fact that we as laborers get the day off. Normally, I would not make a post on a holiday, but given that this series is called Mixtape Mondays, and I have a Mixtape in the hopper ready to go, I am doing the thing and making the post. For those new to this series, Mixtapes are probably the artifact of the 80s and 90s that I am the most nostalgic about. It used to be a currency that you traded with your friends, and at least for me attempted to use them as part of a largely unappreciated complex mating ritual. Since I no longer have cassette tapes, and my dual tape deck is no longer a super power… I now make these largely for me and for you, my readers. When you listen to one of my mixes, you are hearing a part of my soul, because I spend so much time laboring over the correct order of the tracks so that they flow nicely and become what we used to refer to as a “listen through” album. I might be nonchalant about most of the things on this blog, but these mixes mean an awful lot to me on a fundamental level. 30 – Spectacle Politique

I love Eurovision, but that relationship has become a bit more complicated of late, especially with the whole Israel trying to dominate votes thing, and so many countries and contestants boycotting this past year. There are, however, a whole slew of songs from recent Eurovision outings that live rent-free in my head. There have been a lot of great moments that were honored, but also a lot of songs that I feel like deserved to win but were not really given the love that they deserved. There are two tracks that did, in fact, go on to win, but I included them because I love them as well. What you end up with is a really solid mix that is super good to “listen through”. I’ve played through it several times and farmed it out to my team of beta testers, who I thank greatly for putting up with my nonsense. Sometimes I have some greater purpose or nostalgia behind a mix, but this one is just a list of bangers that I think everyone should know about. I will be honest that sometimes I think of Eurovision as this bubble where only things exist there, without realizing that every single one of these artists has a rich career outside of the contest. Side note… apparently, I really like Finnish music because I included four artists in this list from that country. Onwards to the track list, and I am including the country of origin just to make it interesting for folks.

So there you have another one of my Mixtapes. This one was not necessarily premeditated like so many of mine are, but largely just something that popped into my head the other day. I wanted this mix for myself, and like always, I end up sharing it with you, my readers. This round of chemo has been a bear, and I start back with my fifth round tomorrow… and I never felt like I fully recovered this time. It is supposed to keep ramping up from here, so I feel like the back half of the chemo is going to be a nightmare. Thanks for all of the support, but I will probably get more scarce as some days I just don’t have it in me to sit down and write. I am banging this out on my laptop downstairs, and its keyboard is sort of shit for long-term typing. This is what happens when you buy a laptop and prioritize gaming prowess over its ability to be a functional laptop.

I still have the challenge from Ace in the back of my head, but honestly am not even sure how to approach a mix for They Might Be Giants.

Mixtape Mondays: Road Rash Rail

Good Morning, Folks! One of the artifacts of the 80s and 90s that I find near and dear to my heart is the Mixtape. Yes, I know there is a brand new video game by the same name, but I have been slow getting around to playing it. Essentially, Baby Bel used to make these for himself and his friends because I was constantly trying to achieve a perfect listen-through blend of music that flowed from one song into the others. I was forever annoyed by albums that had one or two good songs, and the rest was trash, so that I could not simply throw it in the cassette deck and listen without needing to navigate around. As I developed hormones, I even attempted to use Mixtapes as a sort of mating ritual, and it never actually worked. No girl that I ever gave a Mixtape to truly appreciated the effort and thought process that I went into crafting a sequence of songs that blended together into a greater whole. Now I make them for you, my readers, and each time I make one… I am essentially handing you a piece of my soul, because they all mean something deep to me. If you have ever wondered, I also almost exclusively listen to my mixtapes while driving in lieu of the radio.

29 – Road Rash Rail

This one, my friends, is admittedly going to be a bit of an acquired taste. A few weeks back, I was listening to Tapedeck Held Alot, and marveled about how positive all of that music was, and how even if the lyrics were sad… There was still a note of hopefulness. I attempted to reason why this was, and then it hit me suddenly that this was probably just the last era when I actually listened to traditional pop music. Once I graduated from the Euro Invasion 80s music, I pretty much went straight into skater rock. Middle School era, Bel was a little skater punk, and I have written about this, and the feelings that a Tony Hawk Pro Skater documentary brought up in me. The thing is, my Skater era pre-dates Tony Hawk Pro Skater by at least a decade, and since we had no access to authentic skate culture… Thrasher Magazine became our bible. Right or wrong, we used it to influence everything from the lingo we were using, the fashion we were wearing, and the music we were listening to. Those albums were hard as hell to find, because none of it was available at the local Walmart. So when we got something… we cherished it and dubbed off copies for pretty much everyone. This mix is an ode to that era, and these are the songs that we used to skate to. I have been listening to it all week since creating it, and I personally think it is rather good, but like I said… thrashcore is not going to be for everyone.

Listen To It Yourself

When I created my last MixTape, I was in the holding pattern before Chemo started. I had been scheduled to get my port installed, but had not gone through with anything. Tomorrow represents the start of my 4th cycle of Chemo, and the halfway point. I think maybe I have reached a point where I do, in fact, believe that there is an end to this madness. Round three was a bit of a bear, and I am still having the cold reaction symptoms because they never faded this time. They are supposedly additive each round, so they are only going to get worse from here. I’ve made it this far; I can make it a bit further. As for the mix, this one was fun to assemble, but as I said, I am not expecting many to actually enjoy it. There was one band that I specifically avoided because no one wants to listen to an album that is effectively 40 1 minute long songs. That was most definitely a thing with a lot of the indie punk bands that skaters gravitated towards. It was way more about the tempo than anything else. Last night, my sibling Ace unintentionally hit me with a challenge. We were talking about bands, and we got off on a tangent about how They Might Be Giants is effectively its own genre of music. Sure, I added Ana Ng to Push Me, Punch You, but that song has specific punk vibes to it. But how does one effectively craft an entire Mixtape that fits the greater catalog… without it simply being nothing but They Might Be Giant Songs?
