Long Time Coming

Long Time Coming

Once upon a time I used to do “hardcore” raiding in WoW. The best parts of that time were during the Lich King expansion, and the very very best was Ulduar. While we were raiding Ulduar, the shards for the healer legendary were funneled to our holy paladin. I got a couple from the rare times he wasn’t there. I was so excited and so jealous when he finally finished the quest and got his hammer, after weeks and weeks of us working together as a team to clear Ulduar. Then, as is usually the way of these things, that pally took a break from the game not long after getting this prize. He came back at least, but Ulduar was around for such a relatively short time that we never finished a second legendary. I spent the rest of the expansion being jealous of the shiny bubbles that came from this mace.

I had ventured back into Ulduar a bit after that expansion ended, chasing fragments and the mount. But I never fully put my mind to finishing this thing until recently. At long last, I completed it this week. This legendary didn’t have nearly as cool a quest line as Shadowmourne, but it will always hold a special place in my heart. I’m glad I can finally call it mine.

We Killed Voltron

Our group in FFXIV has been slowly working our way through raid content together. This week we finally got through the 8th boss of the Alexander raid. It is the kind of boss our team excels at, with enough chaos that everyone has to think on their feet. Also, as always, the music in that fight is just flat out amazing, blending together the other themes from Alexander but also managing to be its own unique sound. Basically I admitted that the first time through I was barely remembering to heal because I was too busy listening to the music.

We Killed Voltron

That’s me, always super professional, but more importantly, super fashionable.

After that success we decided to finally go back to kill Ravana EX. Unfortunately for us, it had been so long that most of us forgot the very specific dance required on that fight, and since we had less than a half hour left in our raid time we didn’t manage to kill it. We did get far enough that I’m positive we’ll get it quickly next week.

I love that we got our raid group back together, and I love raiding in FFXIV more than any other MMO recently. Somehow I still can’t quite make myself get too invested in the game outside of raid time. One of my goals for this Blaugust is to spend more time in FFXIV outside of raids. At a minimum I still need to try Deep Dungeon, which all my friends are raving about. Maybe I can finally finish leveling my astrologian that way.

It’s Blaugust Time Again!

It’s the first of Blaugust and that means that once again I’m going to be attempting to post something here every day of this month. Looking back on last year’s posts it is surprising to me how much my gaming habits have changed, and how much they’ve stayed the same. You can bet I’ll still be talking about things like D3, WildStar, WoW, and Final Fantasy XIV, but hopefully I’ll be mixing things up with new games too. Lately I haven’t been invested in any one game enough to attempt writing guides like I did for WildStar last year. This makes me sad, but also relieved. Those things are a lot of work!

This year I’m going to try to repeat my “Screenie Saturday” and weekly “What I’m Playing” on Sundays so my weekends don’t get too bogged down. I pledged to write every day, but this year there’s no win condition or prizes so I won’t have to stress myself out if it looks like I need to slow down or take a break. Not that I was really doing it for those reasons last time, but it is nice knowing I am doing this 100% to motivate myself and for the sense of community this time around. Sweet Delicious Freedom

The WoW servers have officially gone down in preparation for the Legion pre-patch, and I’ve milked every possible gold out of my garrison. For the record, opening crates, shuffling items, and liquidating resources on 16 characters is pretty dang time consuming, I do not recommend it. I also made a last minute stop by Dalaran on one of each class so I could pick up all their Wrath-era PvP sets before they get locked behind a PvP currency grind again. Yeah, I dropped a few tens of thousands of gold on a bunch of recolors that I will probably never use. The river of coins flowing out of my garrison has skewed my perspective on costs. Now I’ll have to get used to hoarding my gold again until the opportunities of the new expansion present themselves. My plan is to be far too busy with other activities to try any of the get-rich-quick schemes that take advantage of the changes being put into place today. I still desperately need to figure out which character (and faction!) will be my main for the start of Legion. With one of every class except warrior at 100, I have choice paralysis.

The other thing that will definitely be keeping me busy this week is the new FFXIV patch, also happening today. As usual there looks to be a ton of great stuff in this one, most notably the new “endless dungeon” type content that my friends and I are dying to give a try. Our raid time last night got cut slightly short so we only did a couple new-to-us Alex fights, but it was still a blast and I think everyone is feeling pretty good about the game right now.

I’m a little sad that I’ll probably put off the new FFXIV stuff until at least tomorrow. There’s so much transmog to unlock and bag space to free up in WoW that I am guessing that will take most of my free time tonight. I mean, sure, the transmog system isn’t going anywhere and I could totally hang out and do fun dungeons with my friends instead, but I won’t because my compulsive brain has been waiting for this day in WoW for way too long. Hooray for freedom from garrison tyranny, hooray for pristine empty bags. If you’ve been looking forward to either of these patches, I hope you enjoy too!
